Inspired by the model implemented by Crystal Schachter (SUNY Ulster CC) to bring together colleagues to share their home-grown assessment systems, RaeAnne Pearson (UK) and Jeremy Reich, (NJIT) organized two assessment “show and tells” to discuss successful examples of campus initiatives to engage faculty in assessment.

As a result of our invitation, seven institutions accepted our invitation to share their faculty engagement success stories.

November 3rd Show & Tell

Engaging Faculty in Assessment of Learning Improvement: A Case Study of Scholarship of Assessment Programs at UNC Charlotte

This presentation showcases the UNC Charlotte's Scholarship of Assessment program which supports course-level learning improvement. With 45 funded projects across six colleges, the presenter will discuss challenges and successes experienced through the development, revision, and maintenance stages of the program, as well as resources needed to replicate elsewhere.

Building capacity with Faculty Fellows for Data and Assessment

This presentation describes Valencia College's Faculty Fellows programs which is a structured program that engages faculty professionally through scholarship and innovation in data analysis and assessment in order to encourage faculty to become assessment leaders on campus.  The presentation will cover lessons learned from balancing broad flexibility with the necessity of having some standard procedures and timelines. 

Engaging Faculty through Professional Development, Mentorship, and Incentives Model from Tennessee State University

This presentation will highlight several successful practices Tennessee State University has

implemented to actively engage faculty in the assessment process.

Key components that will be outlined include:

• The Certificate of High Performer for Outcomes Assessment.

• The assessment mentorship program.

• Professional development opportunities.

• Assessment Day, an event held every other year to promote assessment across campus.

This presentation aims to equip others with ideas and resources for fostering meaningful

faculty participation in assessment activities at their institutions. The presentation will

describe how these various activities are coordinated centrally through the Office of

Institutional Effectiveness. Insights will also be shared on overcoming common challenges to

engaging faculty, including the importance of senior leadership support and dedicated funding.

Attendees will leave with resources like policies, manuals, and faculty feedback that can help in

adapting similar programs at their institutions.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats: An Assessment Credential for Improving Campus Performance

Over the last four years, in partnership with UNCF, Embry-Riddle has offered a data and analytics credential program to over 400 participants, with over 100 participants completing the program. This presentation will cover a) designing an effective assessment certificate program applicable to all institutions, b) exploring technical options for creating a valuable certificate, c) managing and budgeting these initiatives, d) addressing challenges related to completion rates, participant engagement, and the design of meaningful assessments, and e) designing materials for both newcomers and experienced higher education professionals.
